SUZANNE MOXHAY
b.1976 . BRITISH . Based in London
The artistic practice of Bobbye Fermie offers an ongoing response to themes of isolation, personal boundaries, and social anxiety. Fermie explores the archetypal portrayal of interiors and domesticity within culture and storytelling, drawing inspiration from sources such as theater sets and advertisements. Her work examines the intricate juxtaposition between public and private spaces, processing internal emotions through the deliberate staging of architectural scenes.
Utilizing watercolor and collage, Fermie depicts imagined worlds that are frequently inhabited by fluid, fictional characters. The viewer is invited into these distinct environments, glimpsing ambiguous scenes that follow implied intimate moments. Because her narratives are often slightly obscured or one layer removed, they evoke a palpable sense of separation, placing the viewer in the position of a quiet voyeur.
Fermie completed the postgraduate program ‘The Drawing Year’ at the Royal Drawing School, London, in 2015, after earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. Her dedication to her craft has been supported by several prestigious artist residencies, including Porthmeor Studios (2021, 2023) and the Hafod Residency (2016).
