ROSALIND HOWDLE
b.1997 . British American . Based in London
Rosalind Howdle (b. 1997) is a British American painter living and working in London. She completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2022 as a recipient of the Ali H. Alkazzi Scholarship, after a BA in Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, with further study at the Rhode Island School of Design and Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
Howdle paints things that grow: forms that sit somewhere between botanical and animal, microscopic and cosmic. For her, figuration is alive, and the changes that happen in the course of making a painting echo the biological processes at the heart of her subject: evolution, reproduction and self repair. Her compositions often divide into above ground and below ground, day and night, the visible and the hidden, dwelling on the charged boundary where one living thing meets another.
She received the Vanguard Prize in 2019, was shortlisted for the Now Introducing Prize in 2022, and was named one of Artlyst's Ones to Watch in 2023.
