TRACEY SLATER

b.1983 . BRITISH .  Based in Derby

Tracey Slater’s contemporary practice is fundamentally rooted in the visceral, immediate act of creation. Prioritizing the physical and emotional process of making above all else, she approaches her work with an emphasis on the raw, uninhibited line. For Slater, these lines act as direct conduits for energy, capturing and anchoring the exact emotional state in which they are formed.

Working extensively with volatile, expressive marks and a mindful application of eco-conscious mediums—such as VOC-free paints on paper—Slater builds dynamic visual languages that lean heavily into color and unforced gestures. Her studio practice is guided by an overarching sense of experimentation, aiming to distill the exciting, joyful, and unpredictable nature of the creative moment onto the surface plane. By stripping away rigid constraints, her abstract-leaning compositions invite viewers to experience an open-ended dialogue rooted in pure intuition, movement, and a celebration of emotional honesty.

."Lines are of huge importance to my work. Each raw line can encapsulate a moment, an emotion, and this fascinates me. I have an urgency to my drawings, possibly because I’m scared and making up for lost time (due to illness) . I just want to convey my pure joy in creating lines. I am heavily inspired by old photographs. I love imagining what the people were thinking and feeling in that photo".  Slater's practice has been staggered by the artist's struggles with her health. Slater has exhibited at Mall Galleries, London, UK; Wilder Gallery, London, UK;  worked with All Mouth Gallery, Juice gallery, Hunter Gallery and was the winner of the Delphian Open Call.
