In her paintings, Yanqing Pei delves into the interconnected nature of existence, presenting the interplay and interdependence of living beings within a chaotic yet harmonious whole. Her practice explores the intimate, symbiotic relationship between human beings and their surroundings, with a focus on nature, alongside imagined poetic spaces drawn from narratives composed of Chinese ideographic characters.
Fusing traditional Chinese ink painting with contemporary Western techniques, Pei transforms written characters into pictorial visions that blend with her compositions.
Yanqing Pei (b. 1991, Foshan, China) graduated with a BFA and MFA in Chinese Traditional Painting from the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, in 2014 and 2017, and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Pratt Institute, New York, in 2021. Her work has been exhibited in New York, London, Beijing, Shanghai and Rome.
