JULIA BENNETT

b.1995 . American .  Based in California

Julia Bennett’s studio practice functions as an intimate, ritualistic space dedicated to observing environmental mourning, deep time, and ecological remediation. Operating at the crossroads of our highly digitized present and the ancient histories held within the earth, her work confronts human entanglements with an over-consumed and commodified planet.

Central to Bennett's distinct methodology is a physical process of deconstruction and tactile reconstruction. By deliberately splicing, fracturing, and weaving distinct sections of older and newer canvases back together, she breaks apart conventional linear perceptions of time and image. Her sedimentary canvas surfaces are highly physical, pairing traditional oil mediums with raw, manually foraged wild clay, charcoal, chalk, earth pigments, and turmeric. Through merging these raw earth components with pixelated, geometric structural frameworks, Bennett physically collapses our ephemeral digital landscape back into the soil. Each painting stands as a visceral, restorative document of neglected topographies—bridging the threshold between past ecological fractures and speculative spaces of healing.
