Ellie Walker's practice is defined by dynamic interplay between control and release, grounded in a sustained engagement with materiality. By actively inviting uncertainty, failure, and disruption into her studio process, Walker destabilizes her own authority, allowing the medium to assert its own agency.
Her works evolve through a physical cycle of painting, destruction, repair, and reassembly. While some pieces find resolution through paint alone, others are broken down, salvaged, and stitched together with raw or stained canvas—creating a tension between restraint and excess. Balancing intense physical labor with quiet contemplation, Walker yields to what the work insists on becoming. The resulting surfaces serve as archives of their own material histories, carrying embedded traces of compulsion, emotional flux, and transformation.
